The interposed dlsym() function within gameoverlayrenderer.so does not seem to work properly, so when VirtualGL attempts to load functions from libGL, gameoverlayrenderer.so intercepts those dlsym() or glXGetProcAddress() calls and gives VirtualGL pointers to VirtualGL's own interposed functions instead.

This causes problems with VirtualGL, for a couple of reasons: Referring to the comprehensive description of the problem at VirtualGL/virtualgl#25, Steam takes the existing contents of the LD_PRELOAD environment variable and adds its own gameoverlayrenderer.so interposers to the end of that environment variable. VGL is widely used within the open source community, and it also forms the basis of some commercial Linux remote display products. VirtualGL, for those who might not know, is an open source tool that automatically modifies the GLX/OpenGL command stream from Un*x OpenGL applications at run time to force all of the 3D rendering from those applications into off-screen Pbuffers, thus allowing the applications to work properly (and with 3D hardware acceleration) within remote display environments such as VNC or NX.
